Simple Suggestions to Increase Giving
At some point in time, all churches experience declines in giving, uneven giving patterns or financial shortfalls. These instances are no reason for panic or despair. With a plan, most churches will weather through these temporary financial droughts and become stronger. As a faith community, we trust God and live by faith. After pastoring and consulting with churches over the years, I have found a few ideas that have proven to be consistently fruitful. Here are ideas that can easily be implemented in the life of your congregation, which will help develop a culture of generosity:
Celebrate the offering by having generous laypersons read offering meditations or related scripture prior to the offering, at least once a month.
Pastors: Consider spending a minute before the offering encouraging generosity and ministry support at least once a month.
Share ministry moments on life transforming ministry supported by your church.
Prescribe a Spiritual Stewardship Stretching Exercise for a period of eight weeks. The exercise challenges all members to give over and a minimal amount beyond their regular giving, for example $10.00. If possible, use special envelopes weekly through the duration of the program or encourage those who prefer to give electronically to designate their gift as part of the stretch exercise. These weekly gifts will help build giving stamina and raise additional financial resources. After eight weeks, most members will discover they could probably continue to give the extra gift for a longer period.
